What is Endodontics?

Endodontics is a dental specialty focused on treating the inside of the tooth — specifically the root canals. Each tooth contains a root system filled with dental pulp, a soft tissue made up of nerves and blood vessels that help the tooth grow and develop. When this pulp becomes infected, often due to deep cavities, cracks, or defective fillings, root canal treatment is necessary to save the tooth.

How Is Root Canal Treatment Performed?

  • The procedure is done painlessly under local anesthesia.
  • To access the root canals, a small hole is drilled into the tooth.
  • Special instruments are used to remove the infected pulp, clean, disinfect, and shape the root canals.
  • After thorough cleaning, the canals are tightly filled with a special root canal filling material.
  • The hole in the tooth is then closed with a filling.

What to Expect After Treatment?

  • Your tooth may be slightly sensitive for a few days.
  • Severe pain or swelling is uncommon but should be reported to your dentist.
  • In some rare cases, retreatment (called re-endodontics) may be necessary.

Why Is Root Canal Treatment Important?

The goal of this treatment is to preserve your natural tooth and restore its function, avoiding extraction whenever possible.

Subsequent Tooth Reconstruction

After root canal treatment, the tooth must be restored to ensure strength and proper function. The type of restoration depends on the remaining tooth structure and location in the mouth. For example, back teeth often need stronger restorations like ceramic crowns or overlays to withstand chewing forces.

Important Reminders

Root canal treatment does not protect your tooth from new cavities or gum disease.

Maintain proper oral hygiene and attend regular dental check-ups to keep your teeth healthy.
